Colorado New Single Universal Symbol

Currently we are in an optional use period with the universal symbol. Some people are rejecting packages due to not fully understanding the rules around the new single use universal symbol.

Dispensaries can accept packages with the current universal symbol rules, which is the retail or medical universal symbol and also can accept packages on the medical side with the new single use universal symbol.

Beginning January 1, 2019 all product being transferred into your facility must have the new single use universal symbol – whether you are retail or medical.

If product was transferred into your store before January 1, 2019 (December 31st 2018) then you have until July 1, 2019 to sell through inventory with the old universal symbol on it. (Old Medical Universal Symbol)

Right now a lot of facilities are already making the switch, and some companies are still moving through their inventory to prevent inventory loss or packaging and labeling loss.

We are encouraging dispensary managers to be diligent in your intake & record keeping processes. Be sure to keep ALL records and invoices with tag numbers on file in case your are audited by the MED and you have records showing the product came in before January 1, 2019.

METRC is tracking this information as well and so is the point of sale. It does not hurt to have all the information in a spreadsheet or a report and place it in your on-site compliance binder.

We will be offering employee labeling and packaging classes in July and August in order to keep providing relevant content for employees to understand the scope of their compliance responsibilities.
